A Brief History of Franklin Township
Franklin Township was laid out by county commissioners in 1822 and became its own separate political unit on May 12, 1824, when it was divided from Perry Township. It spans approximately 42 square miles in the southeastern corner of Marion County.
The earliest known settler was William Rector, whose land ran along Buck Creek near what was then called the Michigan Road, now roughly corresponding to Southeastern Avenue. The first community election was held at his cabin in June 1824, where he was chosen as justice of the peace. The township’s first formal settlement, New Bethel, was platted along the Michigan Road in 1834 and included a store, a pottery, a blacksmith shop, and a wagon maker.
Southeastern Avenue itself was once little more than a trail cut through the woods on land acquired from Native Americans. The area grew gradually but steadily, attracting settlers who farmed the land along Buck Creek and built tight-knit communities around churches and schools.
One of the township’s most notable early landmarks was the Acton Camp Ground, a 40-acre Methodist gathering site established in 1859 at the corner of Southport and Acton roads. Families rented cottages on the grounds for weeks at a time, and the site drew well-known clergymen, educators, and politicians from across the region. The grounds were largely destroyed by fire in 1905. At its peak, as many as 40,000 people would gather there on a single Sunday afternoon.
The township also has a notable Hollywood connection: Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated actress Marjorie Main was born in the Acton community. Today, Franklin Township remains one of the last areas in Marion County to see heavy suburban land development, in part because of its long history of family farming and ongoing civic efforts to preserve a rural atmosphere.

The population has grown more than 200 percent in recent decades, bringing new residential neighborhoods, commercial development, and improved amenities, while sprawling family farms continue to give the area a genuinely rural feel.
