A Brief History of Center Grove
Center Grove is not an incorporated town. The name refers to the unincorporated part of White River Township in Johnson County, and it comes from the local school system. The earliest high school stood on a hill near a grove of maple trees in the middle of the township, and the name stuck.
Settlers began arriving in the 1800s, drawn by fertile farmland south of the young city of Indianapolis. In 1835, George Mallow bought 600 acres in the area, and his descendants still farm that land today. Family farms like the Mallows’ shaped the township’s character for more than a century.
The first Center Grove High School opened in 1884, and a second building replaced it in 1908 on the same site. On Halloween night in 1952, a fire destroyed the high school and its gymnasium. Residents responded with remarkable determination. Nearly 1,000 community members bought $10 shares in a holding corporation to help fund a new building, which was dedicated in January 1955.
That spirit of cooperation fueled decades of growth. School enrollment climbed from 848 students in the early 1950s to more than 9,400 today, and the township’s population has grown past 52,000 residents.

Center Grove offers a welcoming, small-town feel with easy access to everything Indianapolis has to offer. Downtown is roughly a 30-minute drive, and nearby I-69, State Road 135, and US 31 make commuting to jobs across the metro area simple. Many families move here for the highly regarded Center Grove Community School Corporation.
It includes five elementary schools, two middle schools, and Center Grove High School, which is known for strong academics, competitive athletics, and an Early College program with Vincennes University. Residents enjoy quiet neighborhoods, community events, local parks, and a growing selection of restaurants and shops. All of this makes Center Grove a wonderful place to raise a family and build a career.
