Directions to Our Practice
If you’ve never been to our practice before, we can help you find us using two routes from the Greenwood Public Library.
- Get onto Surina Way heading west, then turn left onto Madison Ave, then right onto Orchard Ln. Get onto the highway heading northwest. After a couple of miles, turn left onto County Line Rd. You’ll find us on the right, at 8936 Southpointe Dr b6.
- If you’d rather not take the highway, turn right onto Madison Ave instead and follow it all the way up to County Line Rd, then continue the same way as in the first set of directions.
Our Local History
Greenwood, Indiana, boasts a rich history that begins with its first residents, the Delaware Indians (Lenape). The area was opened to European American settlers following the Treaty of St. Mary’s in 1818. By 1823, the pioneering Smock brothers, John B. and Isaac, established the first cabin in northern Johnson County on what is now the site of Greenwood Park Mall. Initially called “Smocktown” or “Smock’s Settlement” in tribute to its founders, the community was renamed “Greenfield” in 1825. However, to avoid confusion with another Greenfield in nearby Hancock County, it adopted the name Greenwood in 1833.
The town of Greenwood was officially incorporated under Indiana law in 1864, marking the start of a new chapter in its development. Greenwood’s growth was significantly influenced by the Electric Indianapolis Interurban Railway System. In 1895, Henry L. Smith spearheaded the creation of the Indianapolis, Greenwood & Franklin Company, which brought the first electric interurban railway service to the area by 1900. This line, tracing what is today Madison Avenue, was instrumental in connecting Greenwood to Indianapolis, enhancing both commerce and accessibility.
Another cornerstone of Greenwood’s early economic development was the J.T. Polk Canning Company. Established in the early days of the town, this cannery became a vital part of the local economy, employing many residents and processing various Indiana-grown vegetables. The company later expanded into the dairy sector, providing milk delivery services. At its peak, the J.T. Polk Canning Company was recognized as the largest canning operation west of Baltimore. While the original cannery operations ceased in the 1950s after being acquired by Stokely-Van Camp, the historic buildings on Main Street still stand, repurposed as professional office spaces.
In a testament to its growth and development, Greenwood transitioned from a fifth-class city to a second-class city in 2010, following a resolution by the Greenwood City Council. This status change reflects Greenwood’s ongoing evolution and its important role in the broader narrative of Indiana’s development.
